I recently bought a Maxtor 3100 external hard drive to store all my MP3's, pictures and other various digital media on, since they were taking up loads of space on my computer. And for a while, that was fine.
Today, I turned on my hard drive and plugged it into the USB port. Much to my amazement, all my files had magically disappeared. And I don't know how or why. I checked the drive with Norton and there don't appear to be any viruses on it.
Has anyone else run into this problem?? Any suggestions on how I might figure out what happened to my files and how I might recover them??
Thanks!
Daniel

Try these programs that may help recover lost data from hard drives:
http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/welcome.htm
and from removable media (since it is USB powered):
http://www.pcinspector.de/smart_media_reco.../uk/welcome.htm
... yeah same site ... I hope they help ?

your symptoms look familiar to me and the problem is with a USB-power standard compatibility.
One of the symptom shows with the message "the system cannot find the file specified" and the files magically disappeared.
They actually did not, it is the device no longer working correctly.
To make a long story short Maxtor customer support is "suggesting" me to "to use external powered USB adapter" to overcome these problems.
And this actually works.
What really stinks is the additional not publicly advertized HW pre-requirement.

Thanks for the suggestion. Same thing happened to me. I'm moving files from a 2-year-old Dell Inspiron 5150 (external hub NOT needed) to a brand new Latitude D610 (external hub IS needed). I thought this is supposed to be progress?
