Installation problems with Real Alternative 1.42 [solved]

I just wanted to install the newest version of Real Alternative on my fresh installed Windows XP SP2 (no Real software installed yet), but at the end of the installtation I get various error messages, all complaining errors at creating registry keys (see attatched screenshot).

Attached File  real.png (32.97K)
Number of downloads: 517

Does anybody have a clue how to solve the problem?

Any chance that you had Real Player or other version installed?

Make sure you have other programs closed if it can't write values to the registry.
Also, try latest version 1.42 that just came out:

As I've already mentioned: I've tried to install version 1.42 and haven't installed any other Real products before (or are they already installed with Windows nowadays?).

By the way, the faulty registry path "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\RealNetworks\" doesn't exist till now.

I have had a different problem today with Real Alternative 1.4.2.

Before I installed, I uninstalled the previous version, ran a registry clean, and in Tools/Folders/File Types RA, RM, RAM etc were all gone.

I installed 1.4.2 and after a successful instal, RA, RM, RAM etc are still not there!
In Start/Programs/Real Alternative/Settings all you can do is change the streaming options.

Compare this to Quicktime Alternative where the similar thing allows you to change everything about how you want QT to work including MIME settings. File Types etc.

Appreciate any pointers as to what I need to do, or what I have done wrong.

I followed similar steps when upgrading the last time and did not have this problem.

Thanks

I don't have those extensions in Tools/Folders/File types too, but you can associate Real files from Media Player Classic settings. And if you check the registry: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, you can see .ra, .rm, .ram, etc. are registered.

About the installation problem, yes, Real Alternative creates HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/Sotware/RealNetworks entry but without problems (to me). So I can say the same that Mischcabob wrote, maybe you didn't close some programs during installation. Try to remove RA, then restart your machine and install again without running any other unnecessary apps in background.

OOOps, I didn't see the version mentioned in the descriptive body of post. Guess should have looked in the heading. blink.gif

Anyway, other possible reason along with other apps using same process...
You will get error 5 (access denied) if the user installing the program has no privileges to create that key. You are an administrator, right? You can check and change the permissions in registry with the regedt32 tool.

Well, I tried almost everything. I was logged on as Administrator, I've booted in safe mode, cancelled all tasks possible - but still got the same error. sad.gif

And except of Real Alternative I don't have any problems with my system... huh.gif

Similiar problem posted here that involves changing permissions in the registry.
Check it out:

Puh, this problem nearly drove me crazy but finally I figured it out. Don't ask me why but this is the way "it" works:

First I had to start in safe mode, then I could create the registry path "HCR\Software\RealNetworks" (by changing the user rights for the key "HCR\Software" using regedt32). After that I had to start in normal mode (and to log in with my normal user) to be able to use the registry key "HCR\Software\rtsp" (which was NOT possible while in safe mode as Administrator). Afterwards everything else worked perfect - as Real Alternative does now.

I hope I could in some way explain how the problem was solved for me. Thank you all for your help! smile.gif
