Codec problem with an .avi file.

I downloaded a series that are .avi files. They work perfectly on my friends laptop... but when I play them on my new laptop they are grainy and lag a little. My laptop is more powerful then hers and has a higher graphics card.

I downloaded Nimo Codec Pack, DivX, Avi Codec Pack +, and a few others. It helped alot, now the .avi files are only a little grainy occassionally.

How do I eliminate the grainey-ness completely? I can't figure out what the best codec to do that is.... is there a way for me to tell without having to download hundreds upon hundreds of codecs?

Yo!

Use GSpot AVI.... Plop .AVI file onto the icon it creates on the desktop. It will tell you many things: What codecs the AVI uses for both video & audio and then what possible codecs are installed on the PC to deal with them. You can then 'test render' the AVI to see how the PC is configured to deal with such an AVI should the relevant codecs be installed.

BTW, be selective with codecs... choose ONLY those you need. Blitzing codec packs onto a PC can cause more damage than good because they may have multiple instances of similar codecs, the net result of which is that conflicts can occur.

As to why your films are 'grainy' and then 'less grainy', I am without clue blink.gif . Could be multiple codec clashing related!

Hello,
I'm new here, but I think I also have a problem with the codec of an .avi film.
I only see a little part of the screen , and I know that other people can see the whole screen on their computer.
This is a printscreen : http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b67/Melk.../Securiplus.jpg
Of course, in the normal vieuw, other people see the whole woman, I do not.
Gspot tell me I don't need more codec !

What's wrong then, I checked all properties I could find.

Windows XP S P 2 Prof, Graphic card NVIDIA 64

Sometimes he stop showing me film for 5-6 seconds, will that mean my graphic card is not good enough ?

@MelkboerLucBelgium

Maybe i'm wrong but this isn't a codec related issue... open GSpot and push "Render" button from "DirectShow Render" box. Do you see any errors?

Another thing: did you increase/decrease the size from View > Pan&Scan menu?

...well, it still doesn't look a codec problem. Rather a problem with the encoded video itself...

I think: if you didn't touch the media player's default settings, the problem is probably with your video card driver's settings, or DirectX®.

Well supposedly 640x480 or 1.33:1 ratio according to GSPOT. Looking at the pics, they are being chopped to make it almost anamorphic. (Sorry, I don't understand your language so can only give you best guess.) cool.gif

If other players and resetting the aspect ratio doesn't work then likely drivers issue/conflict.

You didn't hear from me anymore.
But that means not that my problem is over !
I worked very hard with my friends here http://www.onlinehelpdesk.be/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=22276
for a solution ... but still didn't find.
Now I contact my installer, he has to finish the job now!

Maybe you can't read Dutch, but you will remark all the marques that I tried and used.

Thanks for your contribution and wish you all the best.

MelkboerLucBelgium, have you tried matching settings to your friends? using same player, codecs etc.
He is using WMP10 I believe whereas you are using MPC. Also, I'm curious what is up&down arrow in your system tray?
