Hey there. My comp used to be able to play video files and movies without a problem at all since the last 6 months. But recently, I've been having horrible video slowdowns. I was told to use scandisk and defrag, and even uninstalled ALL of my codecs and reinstalled. Nothing seems to work. Here are the comp specs(i hope i remembered them right)

Pentium III 650 Mhz
256 Mb SDRam
NVidia GEforce 2 MX 400
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1

Currently Installed Codecs:
Windows media 7,8,9,10 Codec Pack

Thanks in advance if there's anyone who cares :x

Edit:
Currently tested stuff:
Format(Same as ever)
VLC Player(100% CPU usage and stops sometimes)
Divx Player(Slow video)
Media Player Classic(Slow video)
The Sticky Post about codecs(Slow video with MPC and Media Player)
Media Player 9,10
Defrag,Scandisk,VirusSweep,SpywareSweep

Hmmm - your comp seems a little dated but it still should be reasonably OK. One slim possibility could be that it can't hand le packed bitstream files anymore and you might get slowdown/jerkiness from that.

Get MPEG4Modifier from www.moitah.net - the utility will tell you if you have packed bitstream files and can resave the video file with the packed bitstream header removed (with zero loss in quality).

Failing that try doing a clean install of your op sys and putting a new codec pack on (I recommend the K-lite codec pack). If all that fails it may be time to get a new comp as now that the newer codecs come out (esp DivX 6) they will hammer your processor more.

You don't need to spend much just to get an up to date computer and importantly you don't need a heavy graphics card either.

Cheers,

Fuzzmo.

I'm guessing it's time to change my comp.... It doesn't even do anything right anymore.... It doesn't even play SWF files right(even swf movies have -200% slowdown in them)
I feel like making a comp buying seperate parts, rather than buying set ones....Does anyone have any tips on what i should get? I'm quite a *spam* gamer..

Hmmmmmm, I am a newbe to. i had problems playing my movie dl's on WMP no matter what codec etc... jerkiness and slow or no sound............ mad.gif sad.gif

Someone told me to download a:

VLC player ( it isn't anything much to look at ) but it plays all of my movies all files all types of dl's perfectly, I do not even bother with WMP any longer only to add my music so I can transfer it to my MP3 player.

I will get back to you and give you the address for the VLC player so you might dl it until you decide if you want annother pc or upgrade it, mine isn't much newer but I am keeping it for now, never had annother problem plaing any film

Well, this is getting off-topic rolleyes.gif

The video playback problem:
'If you've an older comp....' thread has been discussed here (FFDShow, etc.).
... and should uninstall codec packs (if have any).
