I have a problem using Media Player's playing speed "enhancement" the only speed it would let me choose is 1.0 ... same with all of the files.
Any idea how to make it let me change the playing speed?

Is it Windows Media Player? 9 or 10?
Media Player 10.

Well, don't know why WMP10 doesn't allow this..... and it happens to all kinds of video
Try a different player. Media Player Classic, Zoom Player, Core Media Player, BSPlayer are all capable of changing the playback rate.
If that doesn't help, maybe a problem with your video card (settings).

Using WMP10?
Click Now Playing, click the Select Now Playing options button, point to Enhancements, and then click Play Speed Settings.
In the Enhancements pane, move the Play Speed slider to the speed you want.
Try selecting/deselecting box for Snap slider to common speeds.
Depends on file you are playing.. not all content can be played at variable speeds.

I did exactly that, but it won't let me change the speed (I saw some picture where the speeds you can select are green, for me the scrool bar is totally grey).
and I tried changing the "Snap slider to common speeds" checkbox and running different files, it worked in none.

Zoom Player works, thank you very much
it took me a very long time until I found how to make it fast play (Shift+Z) but I finally got it
btw I tried Classic Media Player first but it had only one fast playing speed, which was too fast (at least I couldn't find a way to change it), Zoom Player looks very proffesional (lots and lots and loooots of things to select\ change in options) but therefore very complex to control too.

Yea, complex, but at least it does the 'changing playback speed' job
