im using a Windows XP (SP2)
i installed k-lite mega codec pack in one account (adminstravtive). Lets call it ABC.
when using ABC, i also installed video LAN (only the player)
(during the installation in ABC, the 1st few times i tried installing, there were some errors about not being able to write some files so i had to abort and retry installing many times. but somehow, i still managed to install it in the end)

when i was using ABC, everything was working well. i could associate .ogm files with videoLAN and classic media player.

Then, one day, i decided to change accounts and i made a new one. Lets call the new one XYZ. so, i transferred all the stuff in ABC's documents into XYZ's documents. After that, i deleted account ABC.

After i deleted ABC, i found out that some files could not be opened correctly. they are the .ogm and .torrent files.
before i transfered from ABC to XYZ, i could open them with no problem at all. the icon of those files have also changed to the type where its the blank thingy with the 6 dots.

what is worse is that, originally i could set a program as the default program to open those files by right clicking->properties->change... "opens with".
However, right now no matter how many times i do it, the icons of those files still dont change back to normal.

theres more... i uninstalled videoLAN and reinstalled it (in DEF, after i deleted ABC). however, the icons of the ogm did not change to that of videoLAN this time.
(when i was using ABC and whenever i installed videoLAN, the ogms would always be associated with it...)
and, i also tried to uninstall k-lite mega codec pack and then reinstall after that. however, there seems to be something wrong with the uninstaller.

i've already looked at the FAQ and tried the "How do I change a file association?" in it.

can someone please help me? thnx ALOT!

It looks like you have graduated from codec and program installation problems to Windows problems. Congratulations. You will need to be a Windows expert now.

Windows keeps track of the authorities of the user who installed programs. If a user with administrative authority installed a program, then Windows will often prevent other authority levels from modifying the installation. Windows also determines at the time of the installation what user authority levels (and maybe users?) will have the ability to use the program.

We might assume that the new user you established is also an administrative account. The should eliminate the possibility of a problem with administrative authorities. Unless:
1. The Admin account you used in the first place was the very special original Administrator account, which is ordinarily used only to establish other user accounts and manage the computer. Removing that account can cause lots of problems, and is not recommended at all. Trying to do so should, if I recall, produce error and warning messages. But some people delete files instead of using system tools, and get into bad trouble.
2. I could speculate that you upgraded from SP1 to SP2. That could be the source of problems. SP2, it seems is not suitable for install by upgrade, in many cases, but is excellent as an original install, or even an upgrade immediately after install of Windows XP. Lots of people with more experience than I say that installing XP2 on a computer which used, or modified by adding software or hardware does not work so well.
3. The authorities of the ABC and DEF accounts may be, or have been, different if they were modified from default settings originally established by Windows.

The fact that an uninstall file is not found may indicate that you deleted files in a program file directory, instead of using uninstall to remove the program. That would result in the Windows registry having a record of the program installed, but no files to support the program being available. Not good. Sometimes (I hear) a good registry cleaner can remove references to prigrams which have been trashed in this way. Other times hand edits of the registry, dangerous and boring, kind of like demining a battlefield, is necessary.

But (I speculate) the absence of the uninstall file might also result from having removed the user which which installed the program. This does not seem logical, or useful, but Windows does strange things sometimes.

Working in the dark - don't even know for sure that this is Win XP Pro - makes it hard to make recommendations to you about ways to attempt repair. In general, I'd try this:

Make sure you have NOT removed the original Administrator account. If you have, consult MS website, and determing whether a reinstall of Windows from the ground up is necessary, or whether other repair methods are available. (This will let you double check my aged and infirm memory about the dire consequences of having tampered with it in the first place, too.)

Do www searches to determine how to uninstall the programs that are misbehaving completely, even when the install is damaged and using add remove programs does not work as a result. try things like [uninstall damaged programs ], [uninstall (program name) completely ], [ remove program references from registry ], [ review registry clean programs ] etc.

Once all traces of the installs for these programs are removed from the registry and all the files installed by them are gone, and you have a solid Windows XP installation, then try reinstalling the programs, from an administrator program. If they are well designed and behaved, the installation process will ask which users should be able to use them, so you can establish that from the git go.

Good luck.

It got messed up. Well, I'm not surprised....
You've been trying to (un)install while running Internet Explorer, MSN, and so on, etc............. ohmy.gif
Uninstall the whole K-Lite before installing the new, don't reinstall (over-install). And close ALL programs running in background ('foreground'...).
