"Hear What's Missing" is the title of an article in the October 2, 2005 Washington Post (F01) that describes low loss and lossless file formats for digital audio.

The formats described are for people who have invested in high fidelity equipment and want to play their digital music on it, or are otherwise sensitive to the loss of audio fidelity in mp3 recordings. Formats discussed include a new low loss format from Musicgiants.com ("For a $50 annual membership fee, users can download high-quality tracks for $1.29 each") and lossless formats such as Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC), Shorten, Apple Lossless, and Windows Media Audio Lossless.

I like FLAC personally ... compression ratios are not that good ... but it's lossless, that's all that matters to me biggrin.gif .... and it's open source.
