I have a whole bunch of .avi files, and when i first tried to play them, i got video but no audio (in winamp). installed a plugin pack to no result. same problem in wmp. then i tried it in quicktime, and got audio, but no video. tried mpclassic, but i get video in that only. gspot tells me this:
http://genie.hotusa.org/avi.JPG
If i rename the file to .mov, gspot does something different!
http://genie.hotusa.org/mov2.jpg
also once it is renamed, i get the audio correctly in all the programs (but i dunno about quicktime becasue i uninstalled it after i installed alternative [mpc]) but no video again. What the heck is going on?
thanks

Audio and video don't work at the same time and gspot is getting confused

::UPDATE::
I installed quicktime pro again, and in either case, I get audio, but no video.

Also if the links don't work, its cuz of this forum. Just type them in manually or copy paste them.

Why you reply to yourself is beyond me.
Yes, the URl links work fine. Have you ascertained the source file is indeed a quicktime (MOV) format?
If you keep bouncing back in forth between Quicktime alternative/Quicktime, you are bound to have conflicts.
Need to do clean install. MPC with latest Quicktime Alternative usually works, but may have to tweak settings with Morgan stream Switcher to get audio.

I'm glad I'm not the only one.
The files were originally in .avi format, but as I said, there was no sound. GSpot said quicktime at the bottom, and completely on a whim I renamed them. So anyways I reinstalled lots of the media progs on my computer, but I can't really get morgan stream switcher to work in mpc or wmp (or maybe I just can't figure it out). And I also don't understand why gspot pulls up different sets of codecs merely because of a filename change. The detection algorithim has to be more sophisticated than that.
And in case I was totally unclear: It's still not working - same problem.

Unfortunately, it relies on file extension mostly, rather then the file header. You can also try Sherlock Codec Detective.Well what you have you done since Oct 14 to resolve it? There were a few suggestions.
i.e. cleaning up house so to speak.. uninstall/reinstall just essential codecs are in order.
Looking at orig screenshot, it looks like XVID was needed. Did you try latest version?
It may help where you got the files... many times the source will give you hints what format they use.

For one thingyou might try using an updated GSpot, the version you have is abit old. The latest I know of is 2.52 beta. The info that GSpot is showing is actually pretty useless. If the file were an xvid file then the newer version would show several attempts at opening it. It also is a good idea to lick the renders seperately, even then it may only show 1 or 2, but when you render it shows others. Windows uses the filter/codec prioorities to hunt for a combo that will work. It's actually pretty random, but an avi file will by default use the built in avi splitter to try to open it. Self limiting in terms of what combo's it will try. Give th Real splitter and the alternative avi splitter a shot. Plus as mischa asys, avi medic my be able to make heads or tales of that file. Do you have others that won't open either? Ones that you know for certain what they are? That would be helpful in tracking down the issue.
