Registry Problem in Windows XP when installing 'Real Alternative'

Hi smile.gif ,

I am a new bee to this forum and have this typical problem with my laptop.

Initially I tried to install Real Player Basic from the Real website(www.real.com) but the setup failed saying that I donot have sufficient privileges even though I was the administrator.
I tried all different sorts like creating a new administrator user, installing from safe mode.. etc.. but couldn't succeed.

After searching, I heard about 'Real Alternative' and when I tried to install it, I got a series of errors that read like
--------------------------------------------------
Error created registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\RealNetworks

RegCreateKeyEx failed; code 5.
Access is denied
--------------------------------------------------

The above one for the first error and after hitting 'Ignore' I got similar errors.

I was searching for a solution and came across an article in this forum which suggested to create the key 'RealNetworks' under 'HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\'.
I tried this from both normal and safe modes, I got the following error :
"Cannot create key: Error writing to the registry."

Am stuck here and very much need this forum's support.

Thanks,
Jeevs

One thing you can try to do is change the registry key privilages ... click on a specific key ... one that you need access to and click properties (I forgot where properties is located .. just look around) ... then make sure everyone has the privilages needed to modify that particular key ... you can change it back after you are done installing the key. Are you sure you are the Admin ? ... I would check again ... if you are the only user you are probably the admin ... check the control panel ... users)

You should be using regedit ... other programs in general have big problems changing keys.

Hey,

Thanks for your response. But I did happened to check the permissions for the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SOFTWARE and it showed for my login I have 'Full Permissions' and still am unable to create a new key under it.

Also my user profile is of 'Administrator' which shouldn't be a problem.

I really donno where its stuck. This should be surely some problem with the registry.. might be corrupted??
I used some registry utilities but they didn't helped at all.
Are there any registry utilities that can scan the registry completely and correct it?

Thanks,
Jeevs

Crapcleaner is a really good freeware registry cleaner ... you can try it, but I'm not sure it will help too much ... maybe it will ... registry errors are hard to pin down ... if you are the admin you should be able to make new registry keys and install realpalyer ... I just don't get it.

One other thing to do is read the info M$ provides on it and make a .reg file to add to the registry (it may just work indirectly):

I'm not sure if pc health advisor can help you, but try to refer them. I had problem like this before and I just refer to pc health advisor and everything went smoothly.
