I'm not quite sure how to fix your problem ... but since you asked for a better media player I reccomend jetAudio ... it even downloads all codecs on-demand ... if you need a codec it asks if you want to download it, you click ok, and you're done. I've had sooooooo many problems with WMP that I just quit trying to solve them

What os are you using??
What version of Window's Media player do you have?
What is the type of file you are trying to play??
Can it play other video files ok??
Have you done a clean reinstall with the up-to-date version of Window's Media Player for your OS?
It doesn't sound from what you have written that it's a codec problem.
"windows line"??.. Task bar??
Uninstalling all codecs won't help unless you are going to reinstall them again one by one to see which one has an issue with your computer.
Also, that might partly be why you aren't getting the picture. You don't have the codec for that part of the file. (So I just ate my words)
The last time I had big issues with movies not playing I uninstalled every player that I had installed to try and play it. Window's Media Player, all the codecs. Tracked down left over folders from what I just uninstalled, did a reg clean, got the newest version of windows media player, installed it, then installed K-lite codec pack, which also lets you install windows classic media player, and a bunch of codecs, and i added a few more based on what I new I needed at the time, and I've been happy since.
Depending on what kind of file it is, it will either open up in the newest player, or the classic one.
You can try that and see what happens for you.
Oh, hope your computer is updated, and has been defragged lately. Last month lately. Defragging has done far more for me than some people would believe.
