Hey,
I was woundering if codecs install to some specific location withing the WINDOWS folder or can they just install into their own Program Files folder?

Hello bugmennot,
As far as I can tell it may all depend on what codec you are asking about.
I've seen some install into their own folder in the programs file folder. Others go to system 32 folder. The ones for Windows media player go to that folder, and some I don't know where they go.
If you really want to know you should go and check out the website that you got it from. Some might tell you. Then there is using a registry watcher.

Codec packs will install in working directory in PROGRAM FILES. The install wizard will do the work for you copying/registering the codecs to the WINDOWS/SYSTEM32 folder.
Individual codecs and binaries manually (usually zipped) can be installed using INF file and will copy required AX, DLL files to the SYSTEM32 folder. Hope that helps.
