Is it a lost cause? Windows media 7

Ok, here is the deal...files that had been on my computer that had been playing ever since they were downloaded stopped playing sometime this past week. It says on the Windows Media Player that there was an error downloading the codec, so I tried to downlaod Windows video media 7 and it doesn't work. Besides I've been led to believe it was on my computer anyway. It still says error downloading codec...I did an AVI...something (I forgot what it is called) check on the files and it says that both Windows video media 7 and 8 are unsupported...the bigger problem is that files embedded (for lack of a better term) in a web page using windows media...the files I like to use anyway need window media video 8. so what does the whole unsupported thing mean. Thanks

Try with the K-Lite Codec Pack (downloadable at the site).
It has almost all the latest codecs + browser plugins. It can the best solution instead downloading WMV7/8/9 packages at the Microsoft site...

video : 6.40 MB, 279 Kbps, 9.989 fps, 320*240 (4:3), WMV2 = Windows Media Video V8, Unsupported. That's what I get when I check the file in AVICodec if that helps...thanks

WMV is installed with DirectX, I guess.
I suggest you that (re)install DX 9. Find it at www.filehippo.com (there is an October update there).
