what is Torrent files and how to play them

Hi everyone

Can any one guide me
I am interested in knowing what is Torrent files and how to play them . I always find difficult in using these tpye of file ,in my system when i try to open torrent file media player opens up and it cannot play the file . Kind ly explain what is torrent file
