XP Codec has an old version of ffdshow, it must be the problem.
Uninstall and try K-Lite (Full or the better Mega), it has more recent versions of all the codecs.

That happens to me for one if not for two out of three resons.
1. my computer just can't do it no matter how much it tries. (I have two computers)
2. my hard drive needs, to be defraged.
and
3. I have too many things running in the background or a few programs that really use up my resources.
If it's because the computer can't hack it, upgrade the processor. I still have all the mem, when playing the file but my cpu is at 100.
Hard drive needs to defrag. get diskeeper trial. There is a free version of that program, but the makers took down their link. The one time I lost it, it took me forever to find a link again that worked. I might host it later for others.
Things running in the background. Ctrl+Shift+Esc. That brings up task manager. You have others that you don't even know are running other than what is in the system tray. If you don't know what it is, don't stop it.
Hope that helps if the ffs doesn't pan out. I have the K-lite pack, and these are my issues when that happens to me.
Also, after playing a lot of the movies or for over 2 hours I just have to restart my laptop sometimes.

Glad the pack worked.
Have you tried playing the movie on another computer to see if it's the file that has it odd with the subtitles?
As for the splitter poping up I'm not sure. I don't even think that I've seen that program yet. Sorry.
