I tried playing an AVI file on Windows Media Player and this message pops up

the audio codec identified by the format tag 2000 is required to play this file. to determine if this codec is available to download from the web, click web help

I tried clicking web help but it didnt seem to find any >.<

Does anyone here have that file for me to download?

Please search the forum/internet first before asking this. The 2000 tag issue is probably the most asked question about codecs here.

Your AVI-file has an AC3 stream, this means 5.1, usually 6-channel Dolby Digital sound.
You need either

• FFDShow with AC3 enabled or
• AC3 Filter

Make sure you select the kind of speakers you have in the CODEC and in windows config panel. If you have a 5.1 speaker system (with 5 satellites and a subwoofer) you can listen to AC3 in all its glory, if you have only stereo your system or the codecs will downmix the sound in 2.0 sound.

The error has occured because the codec required to play that avi file was missing.Codec stands for 'compressor-decompressor'. In order to play that avi, u need to download Cole2k codec pack as most of the codecs & filters required to play the avi files are provided in that pack. Hope downloading Cole2k codec pack solves your problem

I am really unexperienced with computers. I just want to watch a movie but as previous people have encountered i need codec 2000, so i read this post and dound Cole2k, but there are a few on free-codecs.com and i am not sure which one to download and how to download it so it my WMP will be able to play this movie finally. Would anyone be soooo kind as to give me a link to the exact codec i need for codec 2000 and tell me how to download it step by step. I know it's a lot to ask but i really have no idea.

you can simply dl ffdshow ( http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDShow.htm ) clic on dl and dl!!!

you can dl ac3 codec http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/ clic on download!!

after you installed it( i recommande ac3+ffdshow) it will work in most of the player(wmp/winamp....)

Marisa, i suggest you to install a newer version (not 0.70b): AC3Filter 1.01a RC5. If you really want Cole2k Pack - although it's better to install only the codecs you really need, not a whole pack - get it from here

As Toley said, tag 2000 issue was already covered here and i think we should close this thread...

theformat 2000 is specifically the acm form of the ac3 codec. ie;ac3.acm.
you can see these codecs if you go to control panel, sound and audio devices, the hit the hardware tab, there you'll see audio codecs. Listed there are all the acm codecs installed on your system.
(save yourself a headache, don't mess with those settings unless you really understand them, you'll knock out your audio completely)
