I had an old version of Xvid install which put a fairly harmless piece of spyware on the system so I downloaded the newer Koepi version on the Free-Codecs web page. This has a damaging piece of malicious spyware with it.
It writes to the registry to allow changing of protected system files then at the next reboot, swaps its own version of wininet for the official windows one which then broadcasts all of the websites which you visit.
I am surprised that such a serious security and reliability risk to Windows is bundled with this codec so be warned. However, you can still use the codec if you run antispyware scan to remove the registry edits immediately after install and before rebooting which is when the damage would be done.
