I keep getting the error message in windows media player when i try to open an avi file i have downloaded from the internet that reads, WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER CANNOT PLAY THIS FILE. THE PLAYER MIGHT NOT SUPPORT THE FILE TYPE OR MIGHT NOT SUPPORT THE CODEC THAT WAS USED TO COMPRESS THIS FILE. If anyone has any ideas on how i could fix this, i would deeply appreciate the help.

use gspot ( http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ ) to find what codec you need!
or use an other player : winamp
vlc : http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
the core media player : http://www.corecoded.com/

i used g spot to figure out what codec i need and even though the file ends in .avi, it says it is a non-avi. what does this mean...is there a way to convert it?

its mean its not a avi!!! it can be a rar a zip a iso...... change the avi in a rar or zip and open it with winrar!!! or remname it in iso and try to open it with winiso!
