When I try and play music cds in WMP 10 it gives me the following error, and will not play the tracks

QUOTE
error code=0xC00D1197
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. If the file is on another computer, verify that you are connected to the network. If you typed a path, verify that it is correct. If the problem persists, the server might not be available.

i can open cd tracks individually with Winamp, but the player indicates the tracks are 4356:00 minutes long (or some other absurd number) and if i try to switch tracks, the program crashes.

i have 2 cd drives and the same behavior holds for both of them. also both drives read data cds no problem.

i have also tried removing and reinstalling both programs with no success

could this error be caused by a corrupt .cda codec or something similar? how do i go about uninstalling/reinstalling the codec?

Do you have any other multimedia players installed (eg. Winamp)? Are they able to play audio CDs?
Have you tried searching in Google for the error code? I found this article on MS website:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=834483
however it applies to WMP 9series...

yeah i tried that, but my registry is not organized like it says it should be. i also tried deleting some keys that were associated with cdaudio (carefully exporting and putting them back when i was done) but none of them worked.

i have found some posts on other boards where a few users had a similar problem, but no one replied to their threads/had any helpful insight.

i described my Winamp behavior in my post. iTunes doesn't seem to even recognize the cds, but i never use iTunes anyway

i don't really know that much about audio codecs, or if this is even a possible cause of my problem, however if it is i just wanted to give it a try, and was looking for help to do so. reinstalling windows seems like a big hassle for this and additionally my windows xp disc is at home with my parents while i am away at college, so i won't be able to get it for a while.

thank you for your help
