codec advise needed plz

Im new to this codec thing im using windows xp and currently have media palyer 11 installed all basic the thing is i play all my media mp3 through my media player i prefer it that way but ive down loaded some mp3 but they will not play in my media player i get the message 'unable to paly the file it needs one or more codecs to play' yet i can play it through my roxio (which i dont want to have to do) which codecs am i likey to need to get? i know nothing about this subject by the way

Can you attach one of those MP3s here?
u can download and install XP Codec Pack or u can download free Winamp
