Just can tell you, it plays OK to me (MPC) and I have Real Alternative 1.43 installed.
In some cases I get the same "cannot render file" message even with older .ram files. Well... this one plays... that's all

The second of your two links (which is where I started) gave me a 404 error of "file not found," but the first of your two links played fine (although I didn't take the time to play the whole thing). It did take me to the your second link before playing.
I use the SeaMonkey 1.03 browser (latest incarnation of the Mozilla Suite), and before playing I got a dialog box asking me whether I wanted to save it or play it. And when I tried the first link a second time (for confirmation), that dialog box disappeared behind my main browser window. (It didn't do that the first time; I have no idea what caused the second try to "hide."). But after looking behind my browser window, I found the dialog box, and played it (the first part) again.
.
I am running Media Player 6.4.9.0 revision 611, as part of the K-Lite Mega Codec "everything including the kitchen sink" pack. Note that that pack was upgraded to version 1.55 at the end of July, from 1.53.

Congratulations!
If I recall the K-Lite Codec pack contents correctly, that meant that to get Media Player Classic, Real Alternative, QuickTime Alternative, and of course the needed codecs such as ffdshow, you probably had to install the K-Lite MegaCodecs pack, correct?
I think that's the only one that includes MPC, RA, and QTA; my recollection is that the other Codec packs (basic, standard, and full) don't include either RA or QTA.
Since the MegaCodecs pack includes a lot more than I think I need, I'm wondering if it's feasible to install QTA (thereby getting MPC and QTA), RA-Lite (which doesn't include MPC), and the standard Kodec pack.
In contrast to that step-by-step approach, installing everything in one step from a single pack has the advantage of making sure all the components know about each other and work together. But that might happen even with a step-by-step approach. I don't know.
On the other hand, since a lot of MegaCodec items were marked as to not install if MPC and FfdShow were installled (due to redundancy and possible conflicts), maybe my actual installation is not significantly larger than if I did use the step-by-step approach.
Just thinking "out loud"....

Thanks very much for that suggestion. When I installed the K-Lite MegaCodec Pack version 1.55, I don't think I saw any profiles, much less the "Expert playback" profile. I'll have to be more observant next time. Apparently I focused too much on the Pre-installation instructions, which I saved and printed and in which I now don't see any profiles listed.

Ant: What doesn't get updated: The QTA and RA codecs, or something else?
I've noticed that at the moment, the "standalone" Real Alternative package is one of the few packages (maybe the only package) that includes MPC 6.4.9.0 without revision 611.
In any case, to end up with the latest version MPC, QTA, RA, and the standard K-Lite Codec pack, do you know of a multi-step procedure to install that combination, without using the MegaCodecs pack?

Did you see http://www.codecs.ipbfree.com/index.php?showtopic=1431 yet? CLSID told how to install in order.
