First WMP 10 wouldn't play xvid .avi files, it just gave the usual crash warning and wimped out. So I turned to my often used in the past K-Lite Codec Mega Pack. Media Player Classic loaded, but all I got was a black screen. I scanned through the show and could make out shapes and such sometimes in the darkness, but no way could I watch this. I tried it on WMP 10 and got the same results. I had a problem like this in the past and a simple uninstall and reinstall cleared it up before - not this time. I even went as far as trying the XP Codec Pack and still have the same results. Finally I did a rollback on WMP 10 to version 9 and the problem still lingers.
I'd really appreciate some serious help on this one. I even tried tweaking my video card - nothing.

Well similar topic been covered many times...if bothered to do search on forum.
Also, there is a pinned topic discussing the trouble of installing these large codec packs. The key is to only install the codecs you need after identifying the video/audio codecs using a tool like GSPOT or Sherlock.
Normally XVID, DIVX 6 or FFDSHOW is all you need to play them. I assume you have latest display driver and Direct X for your video card. Also, K-lite codec tweak tool can be handy to fix broken codecs.

Sorry. I usually would search a forum good before posting, but this kinda threw me for a loop and I'm working on my wife's system (I live four states away, long story) and was just trying to get a quick reply.
Feedback that I'm getting from other folks is that I'm pretty well hosed and nothing shy of a full OS re-install will clear up the problem, is it true?

While you were in the 9 did you git the WMP9 codek pak before makin it a 10?
Didja git the latest DIVX player an their codeks?
You need a cuppel more players that you kin use with a rt. klik
Dont lettum in the startup folder, and just give each won a chek
to play whut they desined for.
I use QTAlt for everthin but music. WMP10 has the kewl slideshow.
