Hi all,

(might be, that I'm wrong here - sorry about that - and thanks for help anyway!)

I'm having an avi file (size about 1.5 gb), which contains the first week of life of my son.
Unfortunately, the file seems to be broken. I cannot open it anymore. Error message out of Windows Media Player (in German: "Windows Media Player kann die Datei nicht wiedergeben. Die Datei ist beschädigt, oder der Player unterstützt das angegeben Format nicht.")
Also VLC and other tools can't read it anymore.

My last hope is, to find a tool, which can:
a) repair the file or
split the avi file in seperate parts (so I can still use the good ones) or
c) cut away the broken parts or
d) anything else to solve the file or at least some parts of it

I'm supposted to try out anything, to send the file somewhere, to pay for help (if it's affordable!!!).

Please, if anybody could help me in some way (tipps, links, other forums, whatsoever), it will be really appreciated!!!!

Some free tools that you can try to remove the broken frames form the file and restore the index:

AVI Fixed
VirtualDub

Would have been helpful if translated error message in english since this is an english forum.


Perhaps you don't have proper codecs installed. Have you tried using tool like GSPOT to identify the codecs the file uses? Also, there are other better players to use besides WMP.

You can find out if there are errors in files using VirtualDub Mod using Scan video stream for errors feature.

Yes, you're right! didn't know, how to get EN error msgs.
But here you are with:

VirtualDub: "Cannot detect file type of "filepath\filename.avi" [OK]
DivFix++: "Processing file : Dylan1b.avi Input file is not an avi file! "
GSPOT: File Type: Unknown / Mime Type: Unknown

GSPOT: from an other video file (taken on the same camcorder): Codecs: dvsd

better players than WMP: yes, I know, I tried it out also with VLC.
First of all I recognized the problem, when I wanted to edit the file in Pinnacle Studio9

Hi Swizly!

What is the model (name, number) of the cam?
How did you transfer it to PC, which software did you use?

Is the AVI the original container/file extension? Did you or anyone change it?

And try some other tools those can give you more detailed information about your file:
MediaInfo or AVIcodec

I was using DivFix, it helped me with an Avifile.

Dont know if its the same like AviFixed, but maybe worth a try.
