Hello, i just recently installed windows media player 10 on accident and now i cannot hear some of my downloaded .avi files. I read the last post of the fellow with the .avi problems and i downloaded gspot and it says i have all the correct codecs...so i downloaded media player classic and it still doesnt work. Here are 2 screen shots from gspot on 2 different movies. The first file is Gladiator, it would always play. The 2nd file is National Treasure which is new and required AC3.. so when i tried to get it to work with AC3 i ran into problems and now none of my DVD's play with sound.. Help will be greatly appreciated.

Based on the GSpot snapshots, you have the required codecs... ac3 filter as well...

Do you have any player installed on your system that can override your sound settings? (Real Player, WinDVD, etc.)
Check the audio related settings in WMP10 and reconfigure, if something (equalizer, balance) looks strange or not "normal". Also in MPC.

And see in Control Panel/Multimedia/Audio (or Sound)/Advanced tab that the speakers' setup is ok, and fits to your audio environment.

I can say WMP10 $uck$, messes up the things at all. When would like to watch movies on your computer, there are many alternatives.
So if any way, try to uninstall it... and back to 9series.

i am unable to uninstall WMP10...and even if i do that the thing that made me do it all in the first place is National Treasure would play but with no sound so i downloaded the ac3 codec... even if i uninstall wmp 10 i dont think it will work for national treasure. It does not come up in the add/remove programs section. And i already tried removing it from the "Remove windows components" section. But i will be glad to try if someone will tell me how.

Well, i didn't say uninstalling WMP10 was the solution. That was an advice cause you wrote the problem appeared after had WMP10 installed.

There should be sound with Media Player 10 as well...
You checked the audio settings?

And what was your default player before WMP10? WMP9 or some alternative player?
There are sometimes problems with WMP9's DVD playback...

Now, to uninstall Windows Media Player 10 (extract from official WMP FAQ):
"If you have installed Windows Media Player 10, you can roll back to the version of the Player that was on your computer before installing Windows Media Player 10.

To roll back from Windows Media Player 10 to a previous version In Control Panel (Category View), click Add or Remove Programs.
Click Add or Remove Programs again, and then do one of the following:
1. If you are running Windows XP Service Pack 2, select the Show updates check box (at the top of the list), click Windows Media Player 10, and then click Change/Remove.
2. If you are running Windows XP Service Pack 1 or earlier, click Windows Media Player 10, and then click Change/Remove.
"

Another way - type in the command line:
"C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\Setup_wm.exe" /Uninstall

After uninstalling, try to play the files with Media Player Classic or VLC (VideoLAN Client)

When still no sound or having codec problems, you're welcome to report back here.

WMP 10 Successfully removed and some progress has been made. In WMP 10 when trying to play a movie it gave me an "error downloading codec" even though i had all the codecs. In WMP 9 it no longer does that, however i still have no sound. i believe this problem is stemming from my installation of the ac3 filter.. this is really pissing me off and im running out of things to try short of a system restore or a recovery. Any more suggestions?

The only 2 things i have installed that would make my movies that would originally play to not play are: (and i still need the codec 2000 error to go away so i can watch some other movies so i really need the ac3 filter...)

AC3 filter: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ohdoom/Files/tag2000audio.exe
which was downloaded because a few of my dvd's gave me a Tag 2000 codec error.

and

Codec Pack All in 1 6.0.2.4: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Codec_Pack_All_in_1.htm

That is all have installed.. if i need to uninstall some of these codecs and install a different pack let me know.. but i tried to install the ac3 filter first.. i think it created the problem... maybe it will help some of you more that it has me but i have found other people in my situation.. read some of the posts from this link

http://www.moviecodec.com/topics/523p1.html

at the bottom of the first page you start seeing replies from people with the same problem as me.. but never a solution. I dont know what to make of it. Maybe some of you can.

Some problems were solved in AC3 Filter 1.02a. Give it a try wink.gif

If you still get downloading codec error, follow this guide How to Get the Codecs Downloaded Automatically to Windows Media Player

Still doesnt work.. may have installed incorrectly but this is how i did it...

1. installed to directory.. c:/program files/ac3 filter
2. Ran the ac3config application.
3. placed ac3filter.ax in c:/windows/system32
4. Restarted
5. ran the dialog_patch application.

And i still have no sound. Any other suggestions?

Did you remove the other AC3filter(s) before installing this?

Just to verify what codecs/filters are working... play with Media Player Classic and when playing the movie, right-click the playback screen, go to Filters. AC3filter should be indicated there.
Also you can alter the AC3filter settings in its Configuration window, verifying the Output settings, maybe adjusting the Gain/Master slider.

I had a problem with playing mpeg's and more. Some whould play and some would not play. Codec error always with the ones I couldn't play.

I uninstalled wmp 10 and reinstalled a few times. No good!
I downloaded codec packs and installed them as well. No good!

I fought with this for over 1 week.

Finally, I reinstalled win xp pro and it fixed it.

Somehow files I needed was not there in win xp pro for the movies to play.

Don't know what they are. Anti-Spyware programs or something I uninstalled also deleted files to be left in my win xp pro files.

All Fixed!!!!
