Need correct codecs

Hi everyone... I am a brand new "newbie". I have never figured out what to do about this problem.
When I download various movie files..such as .avi .mpeg. mpg. wmv. instead of the normal windows media player icon on my desktop, I sometimes get the icon in all white. When I try to play the file, media player will not play it because "Codecs are missing". I am not particularly computer literate, so I don't know what they are or how to find them. There seems to be thousands of codecs.. I don't know which ones to download. This happens a lot when I download from RapidShare, but I never know if it will play until it is downloaded. Can anyone enlighten me on this subject? peace.gif

Thanks.

Hi,

Just Install K-Lite Codec Pack 2.79 Std and it will be more than sufficient ...
If you have mkv file (but I doubt) then you will have to install Satsuki.Decoder.Pack.3.1.0.8.

And it could be a good idea to choose another player like BSPlayer 2.11 for example.

take care,
