Hi, this is my first post on this forum but not the first time I have used the tips and support from it or posted on forums! I figured this would be the best place to ask about a codec problem!
I have a bunch of .wmv files and simply cannot play them. I have K-lite codec pack 2.67 installed and have tried zoom player, bsplayer, quicktime, Acedivx, Mediaplayer Classic, and only VLC seems able to open the file but displays corrupt images.
I have tried codecinstaller, videoinspector, and a couple of others just to test the files and disclose which codec is used, but alas no joy. If this was only one file I'd delete it, but as this is many, I clearly have a codec issue! Please can someone help me figure out what I must do to find the missing codec(s)or even how to switch them on or off. I would most likely re-pack them to xvid if I could open them but I can't.
Thanks for your time.

LIke it says in STICKie, you got too many codecs which will mess up your system. JUst need a latest version Windows Media Player... that includes Media encoders/runtime format for playing WMA/WMV files. If using older WMP9 then download Windows Media encoder 9 series. Also, make sure you have latest display driver for your video card and Direct X.

I have a file with the same problem; brand-new WMV, trying to play with Windows Medial Player 10, no luck. I get "Secure storage protection error. Restore your licenses from a previous backup and try again."
Huh? It'll play any other file; there was an Activation Code with the file, but (a) I already put that in once, and (b) there's no provided way to put it in again. I try GOMplayer, and it said to get a new codec, but its link couldn't find a matching codec. I tried free-codecs and don't see a new WMV codec there at all. Maybe the file is corrupt ( lo-o-o-ong 3.6GB D/L) but no error messages say that. VLC "plays" it - all blocky and no sound, and not even clear what the images are. Others like WinAmp get the right length, but just start/stop instantaneously. Direct2Drive (where the file came from) doesn't have a clear re-download option. It's just a stinkin' WMV, this shouldn't be that difficult.

UPDATE: Direct2Drive's tech support followed up my ticket on their site, and got back with the perfect solution - Yay! It was a DRM (Digital Rights Management) problem. I was told to rename the DRM folder (to DRMbak) so Windows Media Player would try again, and this worked fine. It acquired the license for the video (without my re-entering the Activation Code, oddly enough) and ran the file like a champ. In fact, now WinAmp plays the file too. GOMplayer, KMplayer, and VLC all still fail in their various ways. Way to go, Direct2Drive tech support, you rock.
