Hi there. I'm new and I'd like to apologize first. I googled codec troubles and found this site. I'm hoping to find a solution to my troubles.
First, I searched here for audio problems, but wasn't sure on the results I found. Some seemed similar, but then again I have no idea what the problem really is. Then I checked the sticky about Guide to Codecs, and got completely lost. (I'm not a big PC guy, just try to muddle through)
So on to my problem. I have lost certain sounds. Media Player works, video games work, mp3s work. Things like that. What's not working are system sounds of any kind, and I checked the control panel and my sound settings. What I discovered under the windows system sounds is that I cannot even preview the sounds, as the button is gray and not clickable. Also, I have no sounds for movies on the net, like YouTube particularly, or google movies or many sites with flash intros, like movie preview sites. The videos play, just with no sound. AIM and Yahoo IM both lost their sounds as well. So it seems I've lost something that controls all those various sounds but left everything else intact.
Also, I lost something for my logitech webcam. It still takes still pics, but when you try to record from it, you get an error message involving indeo.ligos.
"The program you are trying to run requires a current Indeo codec.
To obtain a current driver that is compatible with this version of Windows, please contact the manufacturer at http://indeo.ligos.com."
When I followed that link, and attempted to get the fix, nothing happened. The cam worked great until we tried to install one of those "monitor your home" programs from downloads.com. It was supposed to take time laspe photos to be viewed either away or when we got back home. Instead it crippled the video portion of the camera. I uninstalled it and then reinstalled it with the lastest software from logitech.com, hoping that'd kickstart it or something. No go.
So can anyone help a newbie with his problems? I'd really appreciate it. And if you could, be simple, I'm not too technical about these matters.
Thanks!
Matt

Windows XP has Indeo codecs upon install. Sounds like you got a conflict or corrupted codecs as result of installing another program that uses similar codecs.
Have you updated your sound card drivers/or integrated sound drivers? K-lite codec pack does have indeo codecs if you want to try a custom install.

I did update my card with the latest drivers, after I started having the problem. I'm not sure exactly what I did even to have the problem.
The only thing I found that I was wondering about on how to fix this, was to delete and reinstall all audio codecs, per the article. Since I have no idea what codecs are messed up, should I go ahead and bite the bullet and attempt this? I'm afraid though that I'll lose more. lol.
PS, sorry for the length of time to reply, busy week.
Thanks!

Holy Crap! That's it EXACTLY! I will most definitely try this fix. That's the same symptoms I'm having, and I do have spyware stuff on my system, ad-aware and spybot.
Just like the poor guy on the page said, I've googled it, I've asked on the Dell forums (since I have a dell) and scoured around the net. That's the first time I've heard that.
Sincere Thanks Isecreb. My next step was to either delete all my codecs and try to reinstall them, or format windows. lol.
