FFDSHOW and other codecs used together... can't open .avi since installed mp4 demux

Hello there... I'll try to make my question as short and clear as possible...

1) the .avi files I am trying to open comes from a digital still cameras.
Here is the GSpot report for this kind of file :

4CC:mjpeg
Name: Motion JPEG including Huffman Tables

Rendering successful
Video Path : (S) --> ffdshow MPEG-4 Video Decoder --> ®
Audio Path : (S) --> ®

2) I am trying to open these files into Sony Vegas 6. IT USED TO WORK FINE (setting up the FFDSHOW MJPEG to libavcodec). It worked instantly when I've done the proper setting into FFDSHOW.

That was PRIOR the installation of a dumux filter (I think that's what it's called) to play back mpeg4 video into WMP 10. This demux filter is called Haali media spliter.

Before installing this software, there was NO WAY I could play mpeg4 into WMP 10 files EVEN with the FFDSHOW MP4 version. Why ? I don't know but the Haali soft resolve the play back issue with the mpeg4 files.

Again before installing Haali, I was able to open the .avi files in Sony Vegas 6.

Now ONLY the sound of the .avi is decoded into Vegas 6. No video track is redered. It only plays sound. No video.

The .avi files works fine into WMP10.

3) I have tried to uninstall the Haali media spliter but I still can't open the .avi files anymore

4) I have the latest update of FFDSHOW (Dec 2006) and the .avi files were working with an older FFDSHOW version. I have reinstalled that older version and it still does not work into Sony Vegas (either with latest or older version)

5) I have reinstall Sony Vegas 6 (which is quite a large software) and it still does not work.

6 ) How can I trace what is causing this issue as it used to work before only with FFDSHOW ?

7) What is missing in my configuration of FFDSHOW to make MPEG4 working on WMP 10 ?

8) I had installed Sony Vegas 6 on a clean system (freshly intsalled XP) and the only codecs I had installed was FFDSHOW, real time alternative and quick time alternative.

I was able to play pretty much anything besides MPEG4 (but my .avi were working into vegas !)

Any ideas before I need to reinstall windows XP again ???

To play files you need two things: a source filter (aka splitter) and a decoding filter.

ffdshow is only a decoding filter.

Windows contains splitters for AVI, MPEG and Windows Media files. For all other container formats (mp4, mkv, ogm, etc.) you need to install a splitter, such as Haali Media Splitter.

MPEG4 is a video format. MP4 is a container format.

Sony Vegas probably uses the VFW system instead of DirectShow. Players use DirectShow. Most video editting programs use VFW.

Go to ffdshow VFW decoder configuration and enable Xvid, DivX and all other MPEG4 variants.
