First of all, hi to everyone out there since this is my first time posting here.
I recently downloaded avi file that can only be played with the media player classic which comes with K-Lite Codec Pack. Whenever i try to play with Windows Media Player 9 (Windows XP), i got the message 'file type not supported'.
Will appreciate any help. Thanks

Hi noolrak
Again, as always
some more details would be useful about the AVI.
So, see what GSpot says (included in K-Lite pack). Is this a proper AVI format, recognized by GSpot? And what's the video (4CC, name) and audio codec?
Also click to render in GSpot to see the AVI is ok.
Then post the results

Windows media player 9 will have difficulty with AVI files that use 3rd party video compression like DIVX, XVID etc... so just don't use it.
Need to use alternative directshow players like Divx player, MPC, Zoom player, VLC, BS player etc.

Hi,
download VLC Player, it plays nearly everything. Maybe try DivFix to repair the Avifile. A member gave me this advice and DivFix solved this problem.

Have you installed and uninstalled some codec packs before?
Playing some files with Windows Media Player after these operations could be a nightmare, it will easily break after changing codec packs. Luckily there are better alternatives like Media Player Classic.

Chp, this was only speculation on my part.
Likely using one of the bundled 3rd party codecs to play it (he mentioned K-lite pack with MPC), so might not be a simple AVI file.
That's why I discounted WMP 9 as a viable option.
Anyway, good idea to identify the codecs with GSPOT (my fav info tool) so we don't have to play this "guessing game."
