hello,

i have a few newby questions about ffdshow. as i understand i can use it for watching divx 3-5 and xvid encoded movies.

1. if i install ffdshow do i need divx, xvid to be installed ? is better to have only ffdshow or both ?

2. what happens if i have installed ffdshow and divx ? which one would be used for decoding ?

3. is ffdshow compatible with divx6 ? i mean to have both installed. or ffdshow will play divx6 movies too ?

4. what version to use ? the official one (dated 2004) on the website ? or the newer ones ?

5. from the newer ones, what version to use ? the standard, mmx or sse version ? i mean i have a cpu that knows mmx and sse.

6. and, is ffdshow really better than divx and xvid decoding ?

thanks for the patience.

thanks again.

1. You only need ffdshow.

2. You can disable decoding of divx in ffdshow options. You can then use the DivX decoder.

3. DivX 6 is the exact same video format as DivX 5. Both are MPEG-4 ASP.

4. Recommended is to use a build from this page:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=173941

5. Use the generic build. SSE is NOT faster for decoding.

6. ffdshow uses a bit less CPU power to decode. Plus it supports a whole bunch of other video formats too.

You might was to consider using K-Lite Codec Pack (STANDARD version). That contains an up-to-date version of ffdshow. An excellent player. And a few source filters to be able to open file formats like .mp4 and .mkv. That's it. Just the stuff you need and nothing more.

You don't need antifreeze.

Windows contains an AVI splitter by default. If you want to play incompletely downloaded files, then use Gabests AVI splitter.
