Is It Possible To Convert AVI. to standard AVI.? with freeware

Hello,

I'm a noob. That goes without question.

For the past three days I've been trying using PSP video9 to convert some of my AVI. movies to mpeg-4, and I've had absolutely no luck. After about 4 hours of searching I've come up with the knowledge that some of the video in the AVI. is not compatable with the software that I'm using.

So, in short, I'm asking whether or not there is any freeware out there that will convert my AVI. files to a totally standard type AVI. in order to then convert it to mpeg-4 in order to watch it on my PSP. Yes, I understand that this could take anywhere up to 3hrs to do.
