Can't remove completely since it's embedded into OS.
However, some people had success using these programs:

XPLite

TweakXP

There is a freeware utility called nLite by nuhi. It is presented as an uninstaller of Windows components & compatible with XP. I have not tested this product - feel that this is an unwise procedure, at least for someone with my limited experience.

I would recommend against uninstalling IE, it is needed for Windows updates. Also, as Mischcabob stated, it is embedded in the OS which makes the uninstall very dicey. You need to at least create a restore point and download & save to disk a copy of IE6 as a precaution.

I would love to discard IE6 myself, especially if I could update Windows with my browser of choice - Firefox. You might consider, as an alternative, installing IE-SPYAD and Enough is Enough! to restrict & lockdown IE (spywareinfo.com). You can add the Windows update site to your Trusted Site list & only use IE for critical updates. Firefox & Opera are nice alternative browsers and can be configured as your default browser without conflicting with IE. Just a thought.

IMO, MS created a security nightmare by embedding IE into the OS, the anti-trust suit & market greed probably the driving factors behind the design. One unintended consequence was tremendous growth in the security software market, which MS is finally entering via their purchase of Giant Software (screams conflict-of-interest, don't you think?).

Anyway - Good Luck & please be careful!

Yes, indeed!
da_punisher, if you really want to remove IE (even WMP, Outlook, MSN Messenger and so on) nLite seems to be the best choice.
Another interesting thing:
After removal, there is an option to make bootable image ready for burning on cd or testing in virtual machines. With nLite you will be able to have Windows installation which on install doesn't include, or even contain on cd, unwanted components.

As Slim30097 said, don't forget to create the restore point before wink.gif
