Vista Codec Pack?

I didn't see an obvious choice for a vista codec pack so I tried the XP one in Vista Home Premium. Files will play correctly, however most times on closing either WMP or MPC, ffdshow crashes. Is there a more appropriate codec pack I should be using?

K-Lite Codec Pack is also 100% Vista compatible.

I have been reading these forums for several months and had formed the opinion that it was just a subsiduary of the kLite forums. Thanks for proving me wrong. Sorry for my thoughts.

Does that Pack include: OGM, MP4, MKV, and AVI?

yes, yes, yes, and yes. It also includes quicktime and realmedia too.

VCP is without the warez that QT Alternate and kLite Mega have in them
so it can also be used in a corporate environment.

QT Alt contains a registered 'need to purchase' codec, CoreAVC,
owned by corecodec.com which is unavailable without purchase.

QuickTime itself is registered in QT Alternate without purchase.

I'm actually a bit surprised public sites like this one still distribute these warez releases.

NO, the codecs bundled with K-lite including QT/Real Alternative are considered freeware or distributed under GNU (general public license). They are lite versions or reverse-engineered packages without the bloated features of retail commercial packages. So NO, they are not considered WAREZ releases. wink.gif

If this is true then please provide a download URL to corecodec.com
where I may download the CoreAVC codec for free or trial use.

My main reason for bringing this up is that I work as a software repackager for large cooperations. Large cooperations aren't in the habit of 'knowingly' use warez. They will gladly pay to use what they need.

When distribution sites such as this one publicly offer files for download, it is assumed that it is either freeware or at least trial or shareware. QuickTime Alt is neither. It contains warez and should not be shared on public servers.

VCP is warez too because it contains stuff from Apple/RealNetworks. If software is freely available, that doesn't always mean you are allowed to repackage and redistribute it.

I don't deny that i break the softwares EULA by redistributing 'free to download and use' software without the copyright holders permission to redistribute it.

But this situation is a far cry from redistributing software the copyright holder intended to receive payment for.
That is warez.

Getting a little off topic and certainly didn't mean to spur on this old debate about legitamacy of distributed software. huh.gif

There are several VISTA- compatible codecs available so the original post was answered. If want to explore this "freeware- free software" issue, I suggest you read this interesting thread or explore the ABOUT FREE-CODECS section of the forum.

you should be using CCCP

http://CCCP-project.net

it's the only codec collection officially endorsed by the developers of Matroska and unofficially by On2.
