I just updated my Quicktime Alternative from 1.77 to 1.81 which I downloaded from here and it attempted to install Smartsound Quicktracks as a plugin for many programs. Fortunately my security software blocked it but it was quite tricky to get rid of and of course it did not uninstall in Control Panel. It put some 50 obscure entries in the registry. How long is it going to be before this kind of malware is made illegal?
Beware the latest Quicktime.

The software isn't hosted on our servers - due to Apple's request... long story. Now we link to 3 external websites; what link did you use to download the software?
Suggestion: Install the new QT Lite

A question that is from a total computer novice...
Is "quicktime" a required program to run anything specific ?
Can I safely DELETE it ??
Opperating system is 'Windows XP Media Centre' and I havd a problem with Media Centre and had to download new 'codecs' standard from memory as recomended by the Dell techno guy.

@Brander
You either downloaded it from a bad location or you got that malware some other way.
@Mainey
You don't really need QuickTime. Most sites use Flash or Windows Media for embedded videos.

On further examination, I do not think the Smartsound software was installed directly by QT Alternative but when I go to a particular site with QT videos, the QT plugin(QTplugin.ocx) attempts to update Quicktime which is when the Smartsound Quicktracks is applied. This has only happened since updating to QT Alt to V1.81.
Searching for information "Quicktime Smartsound" on Google reveals that the Smartsound software is appallingly written and attaches itself to random programs on the computer including Spyware Blaster. Trying to uninstall it in add/remove programs does not work. On mine it attached to Sonic Record Now 4.61 which could not then be run without loading Smartsound Quicktracks.
If anyone has the problem but still wants to keep the latest Quicktime and get rid of Quicktracks, this worked for me:
Delete the folder Smartsound Quicktracks in \Program Files
Go to your login name folder in \Documents and Settings, ie Documents and Settings\Your name and then making sure it is set to show hidden files, look in \Local Settings\Temp. This is where the program is downloaded to and can replace itself from. Unless you specifically save your files here, everything in this folder is probably junk. Delete everything(except undeleteable ones which may be in use) which will include the smartsound stuff.
Run Regedit and manually delete all keys with Smartsound in them. Alternatively use something like Fix-it 6 to remove keys for which there is no folder.
Uninstall and reinstall the program which the Smartsound attached itself to(Sonic Record Now in my case).
Go to Tools/Internet Option in IE7. Select the Programs tab and press Manage Addons. Choose show plugins that run without requiring permission and disable the two quicktime ones. That should fix it, but I will repost if it still comes back on mine.
