wmp9 codec problem

I have installed WMP9 on a win 98 laptop but it will not play a .avi file because it says it needs H264 codec. Its tries to go online to get the codec but it fails to download it giving an error message. When I check the reason for the failure says it needs the h264 codec.
I get a copy of this but when I try to install this codec I get a problem saying that it can't access a file that it should find in a temp directory. I also tried to install the WMP9 codecs from microsoft and these will not install when win98 is the operating system but did install ok when win XP is put on the laptop. I need the operating system to be WIN98 and not XP because this is a very old laptop and will not run fast enough on XP.

Can any body suggest what is going wrong with installing the codecs.

You can also download FFDSHOW which plays H264-encoded files and uses little resources. thumbsup.gif

Hello, have you tried using K-Lite? I had a very simular problem with windows vista only with a different missing codec. I downloaded every codec pack I could find, and still could not get the video to play. I finaly downloaded K-Lite from this site from one of the topics and it worked great! I'm not sure if it works with 98 or not, but it may be worth a try. Good Luck, Doug.
