Hello,
After installing any codec package, AVI files don't show up under "media files (all types)" in WMP version 11. I've already tried the "Open with..." method to no avail.
Any idea???

Not sure I follow. WMP11 organizes library into audio, video, recent, playlists etc. Once you imported library
by monitoring folders, do the audio files appear under any category?
Can you see the AVI files in Windows Explorer? Make sure extensions are not hidden/turned off by default. Might be helpful to know what player/codec you installed... since some programs have tendancy to "steal" associations.

Sorry for not being clear.
When I go to File > Open within WMP, AVI files don't show up with "File type" set to "Media files." If I uninstall the codec package (K-Lite), however, they do show up as "media files."

This is a bug in WMP. If too many file types are defined, then some will not show up under "All Types".
Uninstall K-Lite and install the latest version 3.5.2 beta. Then the problem should be gone because that version add less new types to the list.

I don't see version 3.5.2 anywhere. Where can I download it from?

Okay, I follow.. 
I reproduced same sequence using WMP10 on WINXP PRo. Yes, It is just a Microsoft quirk. MS groups certain files together as MEDIA files i.e. Mp4, mp4a, ogg, AAC etc. LIke ASDF said, it might have to do with too many file associations and MS can't define them.
Instead of using MEDIA FILES (all types) in dropdown box, just select ANY FILES or Windows Video files. Your AVI files and MP3 files for that matter should appear in the folder.
I usually use MPC or Jet Audio Plus... Anyway, you can always access the media through the library... double-click to play file in respective category or just ADD files to PLAYLIST. Anyway, i hope that finally clears it up.

I do have those registry entries, so it does look like a bug with WMP.

You try to use software winmpg video convert your document format conversion. Perhaps winmpg can help you solve this problem.

It is a known GUI bug of WMP, not a playback problem.

What's the bug in WMP? What are the Extensions settings on your system where you DON'T see AVI?

Just add a couple of additional extensions and it will start showing the problem.
