Hello, all. I’ve Googled my brains out trying to solve this puzzling problem, and I keep coming up empty. I hope someone here can offer a solution.
Up until now I have not had any problems playing avi files in Windows Media Player 11. However, I now have 6 new avi files that play fine in VLC Media Player, my Playstation 3, and Media Player Classic, but they will NOT play in Windows Media Player 10 or 11. You may say, “Big deal. Forget about WMP and just play it in VLC then.” Well normally I would, but I paid a good chunk of money for a Cucusoft iPod video converter program about a year ago, and although it usually works fine with avi files, it ALSO is having a problem with these 6 files. I feel the Windows Media Player problem and my Cucusoft video converter problem are connected, as it seems to be too much of a coincidence not to be. If I solve my WMP issue, I’m sure my video converter issue will be solved. To make matters even more frustrating, my friend has no problem playing these 6 mysterious avi files in Windows Media Player 11 on his computer, yet I simply cannot. Here is some info:
*I've downloaded the latest all-in-1 codec packs. Still no luck. And a “Video Inspector” program says I have all the right codecs to play the file. (???!!!)
*All other avi files work fine in Windows Media Player 10 and 11. It’s just these 6 specific avi files that I received all at once. (They are related. Codec info enclosed below.)
*Cucusoft tech support has been less that helpful so far. (e-mail replies seem automated. Lame.)
Here is where you may have had the same experience. (I hope). I get this error from Cucusoft iPod video converter when it tries to load:
---------------------------
Media Controler Information
---------------------------
FAILED(hr=0x80004001) in m_pBA->put_Volume(m_lVolume)
Here is the codec information of 1 of the 6 files. I believe they all use the same codec:
*********** Following is Codec Information ***********
MPV Decoder Filter {39F498AF-1A09-4275-B193-673B0BA3D478} C:\Program Files\Essentials Codec Pack\Mpeg2DecFilter.ax
Elecard MPEG2 Demultiplexer {731B8592-4001-46D4-B1A5-33EC792B4501} C:\WINDOWS\system32\mpeg2dmx.ax
*********** Codec Information End ***********
And the final thing I can report to help you help me troubleshoot is that the evil avi file in question is 25 and some minutes long. But when Windows Media Player 10 or 11 gets a hold of it, it says it’s 3:11 and will not play.
Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I seemed to have solved my problem, thanks to zachdms's locked post ("Bugs in this site that break user's machines") about poor codec packs. I believe Cucusoft recommended some of the bad codec downloads he warns us about, so I uninstalled them and looked for others. Sure enough, WMP works fine now. I guess these codec packages were tripping each other up. I'm just glad it's all fixed now. For all of those who looked at my post, thanks for taking an interest and attempting to help. Just wanted to report the good news.

I seemed to have solved my problem...
That's great!
Just curious, what codec packs did you install?
