hello,
i was trying to watch an avi file, when the wmp gave a message , canīt play cus codecs are missing and i just ear the sound, thats ok, i downloaded ffdshow, installed, but now , the problem, when i try to watch a movie, wmp freezes at beggining , canīt move mouse, no ctrl+alt+del, no video, but i can still ear the sound , after a while the computer reboots by itself. Already tried the k-lite codecs(and that tool to see if i have the codec required) , already tried mp classic and vlc, the same happen dry.gif . Already tried uninstall the card drivers(nvidia tnt2) and codecs and install everything again, no luck, the same. Now the only way of having wmp to not crash when launch is to uninstall any codecs , which take me to the very beginning , canīt watch avi files. and , got to say i used to watch avi/movie files in this computer before, got to be some conflict somewhere..
it happen to anyone?
thanks.

maybe you could try to format your OS harddrive and install it again and then send us some feedback so we know if the problem's been solved or not...

must be the solution, but i guess i will wait for other more serious problem to reinstall xp, i found a temporary solution, like i said i installed the video codecs required, and also tried on wmp, mp classic and vlc player, in all the same problem, i decided to try loading an avi on a software i had installed on my pc , the free camstudio recorder, this software had a file called playplus.exe, which is a simple avi player, and for my suprise , it worked, no craches, got video and sound working. with the rest of players the problem still remains .thanks.

I wish there was a tool that went through your hard drive and removed every single codec (or at least relegated them to .bak status) that it finds. That way you could be sure to start with a clean slate with zero codecs and build your codec library from the bottom up.

I need to learn a whole lot more about codecs... Too bad I'm not a programmer. I need to figure out what files I should rip out of my machine and what files I SHOULDN'T rip out of my machine. Uninstalling "codec packs" is one thing, but cleaning up the miscellaneous 200 other codecs located all across the hard drive? That's another kettle of fish...
