Hi,
I had a problem with "quicktime alternative" , not "apple quicktime", that i hope someone can help me.
When I want to install quicktime alternative, i got the following message: Setup has detected that you have quicktime installed. You must uninstall Quicktime before you can install quicktime alternative.
Well, i am pretty much sure i have uninstalled apple quicktime already. I did a clean installation of quicktime and uninstall it successfully from the add/remove control panel. (Before i had problems to install/uninstall quicktime. There were some advices available on the internet so i did it and can install quicktime again.) But I still got the same message. Even i cleaned the registry and all the folders/files that have "quicktime" in their names. Quicktime alternative still does not allow me to install it.
Is it possible to get a "smater" quicktime alternative?
Does anyone know why quicktime alternative still complain?
p.s. I never used ipod, if this may be a possible reason, though I had it somewhere in the computer for a while and removed before long when i started to have problem with quicktime.
Thasnks in anticipation.

There is probably some reference to QuickTime still present in the registry key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall". That's the most logical place to check for installed software.

Thanks for the tip. It solved the problem.
I went through each of the registry keys listed in the above given folder and found some references to very old quicktime versions (not only one!). they didn't show up in the add/remove list so i have no idea the uninstaller is still in my computer. After i just removed these keys, quicktime alternative can be installed.
Moreover, i also found a few "debris" left over from other programs i though i have removed from the computer. It appears that the uninstaller removed other bits but left itself (or a reference of itself) in the computer !
How could this happen? Is the users fault or the windows xp or the uninstaller is not doing an effective job?

Usually it's just bad uninstallers that leave such a mess behind.
