Need help - WM Player and Windows Explorer keep crashing when playing video files

After installing K-lite full v3.9.0 +update (or any previous versions), WM Player and Windoes Explorer displays the following pop-up:

"The found Divx Directshow decoder(divx-c32 ax) may be incompatible with the current operating system please, try to install version 3.11 or 4.0+"

This message only appears once.

When opening 4 or 5 video files in succession, WM Player and Windows Explorer both crash and freeze, requiring a reboot to get back to normal operation.

If I uninstall K-lite I still get the crashing, however, I do not need to reboot - just kill the processes in Task Manager to get back to normal operation.

Any ideas?

Some other program must have installed that ancient filter, because K-Lite doesn't contain it. Find that divx_c32.ax file and delete it.

To fix the explorer crashes do this:
Start > Run > regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
That will disable the thumbnail plugin that causes your problems.

Hi:

A search of the computer found 2 instances of divx_c32.ax, one in C:\Program Files\DivX, and the other in C:\WINDOWS\system 32.

I can manually delete both, however, perhaps I should delete the DivX program and folder properly. I cannot find the entry/uninstaller in Add or Remove programs. Can you suggest how to uninstall it?

Also, Windows explorer still "sometimes" crashes after opening six or more .avi files in succession, even after the Start > Run > regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll fix.

Other times I can open 20 or more without crashing. Can you suggest anything else to fix this, or are the .avi the problem. After restarting WM Player, the last file that caused the crash plays fine.

Thanks.

Steve

You might have some other bad filters installed.

Use the Codec Tweak Tool program that is included with the K-Lite Codec Pack to generate a list of all installed DirectShow filters. Post that list here so that we can analyze it.

Hi:

There were several error pop-ups during the installation of K-lite Full V3.9.0 that required me to press the "Ignore" option.

For example one of the pop-ups said,
__________________________________________________
Error creating registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.m4a

RegCreateKeyEx failed; code 5.
Access is denied.

Click Retry to retry again, Ignore to proceed anyway (recommended), or Abort to cancel installation.

Here is the list from the Codec Tweak Tool that you requested.

The list is too long for one post so I had to split it up.

K-Lite Codec Tweak Tool | Log file | Generated at 2008-05-31 03:06:51

...

(A total of 8 filters, 7 shown, 1 hidden)

Thank you.

Some program has broken the access permission on those registry keys. You can use RegEdit.exe to fix that. The Administrators group should have full access to the keys.

I will have a look at your filter list later.

995 filters. I believe you now hold a new world record tongue.gif

Sorry, that is too much for me to go through. I suggest you start uninstalling some of those software that you don't use.

Hi:

I'm not proud of this new world record.

I will start uninstalling the sofware - but which ones? and which ones will fix the crashing?

What do you think of using Filmerit in this case?

See http://paul.glagla.free.fr/filmerit_en.htm

Do you have any experience or feedback with it?

Thanks

Stephen

Tools such as Filmerit are only useful if you know what to do with it smile.gif I would advise not to start randomly disabling things.

Go to the Windows control panel and click on the Software icon. Remove software that you don't use. That should hopefully reduce the list a bit.

If you want to know which filter(s) are causing the troubles, then start by finding out which ones are getting used when playing your files. You can do that with tools such as GraphEdit, GSpot, or by using a player that allows you to view the used filters, for example Media Player Classic.
