help with .mkv

Hello forum. I'm so glad I found this site!

I am trying to play my .mkv (H264/DTS) files in MPC and cannot get any sound. I am using CoreAVC and Haali Media splitter and the video looks fine. I tried ffdshow for the audio but I couldn't get it to work. All of the Internal and External filters in MPC really confuse me and I'm sure I messed up some settings somewhere. Also, if I'm missing some settings in CoreAVC or Haali (I have not touched any settings there). I have deleted ffdshow at the moment so I am starting from scratch again. At least for the audio.

I tried to find a COMPLETE MPC manual so I could study what all of the settings do but I can't find one. I need someone to walk me through this a bit, please, or at least show me a link to explain in newbie terms, the best software and settings I can use to get these files playing in MPC. I think I'm using the right ones (CoreAVC and Haali) for the video at least?

I have Gspot which says that ffdshow is missing so I'm assuming it wants me to d/l it again? I also have AVIcodec but that says it doesn't support .mkv files.

Thanks for the help forum! This is really driving me crazy, as I'm sure it has to most of you guys in the beginning smile.gif Too many codecs and settings, ARRRGGG! lol...

Hi CHP, Thanks for the help smile.gif

Under "Proposed Codec Solutions and Tests" I have the following:

Partial Render failure: Following is the error reported by DirectShow: (*which I deleted)
0x00040242: [unknown]
[Src]-->>--[A]-->[CoreAVC Video Decoder]>--[B]-->[video Renderer]

So, I think it's telling me I NEED DirectShow to play audio?

*EDIT*

chp,

I was searching around for answers and I came across mplayer. I ran it and loaded up my .mkv file. It plays PERFECTLY! Suffice it to say, I am EXTREMELY happy with this player and I am going to use it exclusively now, I believe. Why anyone would want to mess around with all of the other players and codecs and such is beyond me! mplayer RULES!

Great that MPlayer plays it OK!

I thought you want MPC to play it. MPC plays videos using DirectShow (so you can play the video with any other DS based player).

I guessed you missed AC3 decoder (of the info: "DTS") but waited for GSpot info.
Anyway, you can safely install AC3 Filter. It's essential for the HQ and DVD rips.

All the best:)
