When I played a file with the extention .avi in windows movie maker or windows media player it would play the audio but not the video. I downloaded the K-Lite Codec Pack and it fixed my problem in windows media player but not windows movie maker. I also downloaded the ffd show pack to but it didnt do anything from what I can tell. In another forum it said something about going to my compatibility tab and checking the ffdshow box but it never showed up in my compatibility tab, just .avi decoder which doesnt seem to work either I guess. I am running vista and would like some help please.

The codec pack already contains ffdshow. So uninstall both and install just the codec pack. That way you know you have a proper version of ffdshow installed.
You should see ffdshow listed in Movie Maker compatibility settings. If you got a 64-bit OS, you might also need to additionally install the 64-bit codec pack (if Movie Maker is 64-bit).
What kind of video does you AVI files contain? Xvid or something else?
