Windows Media Player Classic + HD movies mkv

Hello,

I want to start using the Media Player Classic to play all my video files, which are mostly mkv or avi files.

I did download the K-Lite Codec Pack 64Bit and MPC HC 64Bit, but everytime I opened a file, explorer.exe crashed, so that doesn't seem to be an option whatsoever.

Right now I'm using CoreAVC and MPC 32Bit, which is working OK, but I've heard from a friend that it's possible to have the graphic chip render the video files, so that's what I would like to do, since if I'm watching a 1080p movie and running Firefox on the side, the CPU load maxes out occasionally, which apparently shouldn't be the case, because apparently it's possible to play these files with only 1.3GHz:

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad r61i, with a Core2Duo @ 2.0 GHz, 3 GB RAM and the Intel GM965 onboard graphics chip, on Windows 7 64Bit.

I found several tutorials like the above mentioned, which mostly included PowerDVD's h264 encoders, which were all really confusing, and I am really afraid of messing up so badly that I won't be able to play files at all.

I have absolutely no idea about all these codecs, containers, splitters, and decoders, and I would really appreciate some tips on how to handle this.

Thanks a lot for all help!

When you remove codecs or packs, you need to manually remove the inferences from windows registry. You will need to have a crash course in editing the registry. The editing process can take up to 4 hours. You only need 1 codec pack at a time, or you run the risk of duplication in the codecs. Explorer shutdown usually happens on copying bulky media files while protection is on. Sometimes AVware can interfere with playback as well. The whole process is trial and error.

MPC can decode videos with the help of your graphics card through its internal DXVA decoders. However, that requires a DXVA compatible graphics card. I don't know if the INternal GM965 is compatible.

It is recommended to use the 32-bit MPC.
