Tools like MediaInfo and GSpot can show you what kind of codec you need.
But it is possible that you got a 'fake' file, since it does not work even with a codec pack installed.

I have tried about 40 .avi files and none of them will work.

Kristina, I had problems with windows media player not playing certain video files until I Installed K Lite Codec Pack. Instead of WMP, I switched to Media Player Classic which is also installed during the codecs installation.
So far (2 years now), it has played every single popular audio, and video file. I haven't use WMP since. But the bonus is that those codec's also allow WMP to play video and audio files it previously could not.
Give it a try and that should solve your viewing problem. Only exception is if a file is a fake disguised as a media file.

This might help:
K-Lite Codec Tweak Tool > Fixes > Re-register base DirectShow filters
