Ok, I download this file ffdshow-20050312 from here http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDShow.htm

connected with this forum. I downloaded so

that I could view avi clips. It didn't really work, but more importantly it's

completely stuffed everything up, now media player and divX wont play ANY

CLIPS of ANYTHING anymore, it just says something like 'is not a valid AVI or

MPEG-4 file' So basically, now it says that it wont play anything BUT avi clips.

I've uninstalled the ffdshow-20050312 clip but it's made no difference. Does

anyone have any idea how to undo this?????? I can't view any video clips of

anything. I cant even listen to MP3s!!!!! If I click on an mp3, Media Player just

says 'Connecting' forever and never plays it. Someone help!! sad.gif How can I undo

this????

Well, basically, you don't need FFDShow to watch AVIs... Just the decoders used in the AVI container. GSpot can provide this information.

To recover the system, i suggest download Sherlock, it tells you what codecs are broken (Win XP). Then uninstall & reinstall the affected codecs, programs.

Good idea to install only the codecs you need. Otherwise, it will cause conflicts.
You fav Mp3 media player i.e. winamp, VLC, jetaudio etc. should have necessary MPeg decoder .
Make sure the filetype is associated with the player.

You can also get list of codecs within GSPOT.
Go to SYSTEM menu.. list codecs and other filters.
The ones highlighted are broken. wink.gif

When Win98SE, use GSpot, as Mischcabob wrote wink.gif

Uhhh ...ok in order

1) make sure it is not hidden .... try this path: (replace H_TeXMeX_H with your user name)

C:\Documents and Settings\H_TeXMeX_H\My Documents

Just go to My Computer and click on the main partition (usually C:\) then click Documents and Settings, then your user name (mine is H_TeXMeX_H, of course tongue.gif ), then click My Documents ... if you do NOT see My Documents click:

Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> Hidden files and folders -> Show hidden files and folders

click ok, then try again ... if you still dont see it try ...

2) uninstalling the last program installed and if that does not work ...

3) run Panda freescan anti-virus here: http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/
if it does not find anything then you can ...

4) also try this file recovery program that might work:
http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/welcome.htm if not then ...

5) restore the system to an earlier date, to do this goto Start -> Run and type C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore\rstrui.exe click OK and follow the wizard .... I hope that helps.

Note: I never store important documents in My Documents because so many hackers, viruses, ad-ware know that everyone stores things there ... just make a new folder on another partition called My Documents 2 or something and store things there. (Changed the order several times, not sure which is best order huh.gif just try them all unsure.gif )

yeah unfortunately i lost it all, thanks anyway

i've reformatted since then etc

There's these clips I'm trying to view, in windows explorer it says they are 'video clip'
and in properties it says they are avi
when I try to play them in divx player I get a message saying

'the file contains the following type of data'
video data: FOURCC code "MPEG"

Can anyone tell exactly what codec I need to download? or provide a link and tell me specifically which one to get? Im kinda new to this codec stuff

i've already installed the latest divx and xvid codecs and the K-lite codec pack

but these clips still aren't playing, so am not sure what to download

these clips used to play on my computer before I had to reformat
but I cant remember what codec they must have used in order to play...

should i download one of those 'all in 1' codec packs? or is there something specific for these files?

also, should I uninstall anything I've downloaded so far? because these 3 things I've downloaded and installed contain similar codecs, dont know if that can cause problems....?

auxsetup

qv

XviD-1.0.3-201

DivX521XP2K/DivXPro521ME98

afreeCodecVT_Setup

ffdshow-20050312

i guess one of these must have worked becoz the clips used to play, does anyone hav any ideas which one it would have been?

Well, again: I suggest open the file with GSpot, it'll provide more info. Click "Render" to see, by which decoders is your computer trying to play this AVI.

And you have K-Lite Codec Pack installed, it includes the DivX and XviD codecs, so it wasn't necessary to install them (maybe the DivX player was the reason?).

Also you can see on the download page of the codec pack, there are some.... MPEG decoders in K-Lite CP, but may try the basic MPEG codecs: Stinky's MPEG-2 Codec, Elecard MPEG-2 Video Decoder or check this post for more.
But first, see GSpot's report wink.gif

i used gspot, and it says that it should be playing ok, I dont understand why it wont produce a visual, only sound in media player. But in divx player it wont play it at all.

here's a screen cap of what came up when i tested one of the files, all the files come up with the same result in gspot though

Okay, according to GSpot it's Motion JPEG or sg.like that rolleyes.gif
Really don't know why doesn't play... i don't have K-Lite CP installed but there is support for this format in it (as GSpot said too).

Only thing i can suggest, download a stable FFDShow version (2004.10.12. for example), and then try to play this AVI with Media Player Classic (included in pack) or BSPlayer.

In FFDShow's Configuration, under Codecs, you can alter the settings

thanks for the info, hey u know that other thread where I originally posted about not being able to view certain avi clips, it turned that they were actually corrupt, so nothing would make them viewable. BUT the ones that I cant view at moment are different to those ones I asked about originally, just wanted to make clear that its for different files now. These files that I'm trying to view now, I used to be able to view those in the past before I had to reformat, i.e. I know they actually work.

SO, do u remember how when I first posted my problem was that I had installed ffdshow and it complete fkt up EVERYTHING, after installing that, I couldnt view ANY clip whatsoever, I couldnt even listen to an mp3,
So, are you SURE I should try this ffdshow20041012?
The one that fkt up my computer was ffdshow20050312

That list of codecs that I mentioned earlier in this thread, I'm pretty sure that ONE of them made these avi files viewable (unless I didnt list all of them) but I just cant remember which one it was, But it wasnt ffdshow coz that messed everything up, but I dont want to install ALL of them for various reasons, I just wanna install the right one, or whatever one you tell me to install

I'd never installed that Klite pack before, someone just told me recently that if I installed it I'd be able to view almost everything, so I guess I've acidently installed the same codecs 2 or three times coz I also installed divx and xvid and one other codec nAVI Vx3 MPEG-4 (coz I thought it would let me view these avi clips but it didnt)
So I dont know if it will cause problems that I installed so many and some of them are the same ones....

maybe I can fix this quicker if u email me or something instead of posting back n forth etc i'm alyssa_sky_callaway@hotmail.com

Wow certainly having lots of problems... Installing too many codecs causes conflicts and more headaches. Viewing AVI file shouldn't be this much work. blink.gif

Don't know your specs, but assume you are running WINXP SP1+ with latest directX 9C (includes MPEg support for WMP). Audio drivers installed properly?

Trying to play motion JPEg? These lossy JPEG codecs require significant amounts of CPU power are usually assisted by a hardware capture card. Quicktime/Quicktime Alternative easily plays this format unless there's a problem with the file.
