can't play videos, codec problem

Hello, I had recently reinstalled win98 on my old home computer and d/l some stuff in order to play some music and videos but whenever I try to play in now ( in any of players) I get a message that program made an invalid operation and will be closed and that there's some error in unknown modul. I ran GSpot and there's a problem with one od the video codec:
VFW UCOD ClearVideo ** Unknown VFW Driver file missing

and I'm unable to render any file in GSpot - it just crashes and after that I get another message about invalid operation and error in MFC42.DLL modul. ( i tried to d/l and reinstall that but I can't)

I really don't know what to do, I'm able to play non avi files on Power DVD player ( altough I still get the message I can ignore it) but everywhere else ( real player, media player, divx player just crashes). And if I try to play an avi. file on Power DVD my machine just freezes.

What can I do - will I need to unistall all codecs and install them again?
I'm very tempted to just erase that broken codec from my computer but I doubt things are that simple and I really don't want to mess this thing even more

I would really appreciate any insightful thoughts on that matter!

Well, don't know... unsure.gif
UCOD is ClearVideo fractal compression-based video codec, available as a Video for Windows codec, as I've read. Maybe you should try Windows Update, or dl Windows Media Player 9.

When you run GSpot, it tells, you need this codec for a specified AVI or it's highlited as broken in the codec list? If already broken, you can unregister it (with RegShell for example) or delete the .dll

Also this problem may be related to your video card driver (?), so be sure the drivers are installed correctly. Try the DirectX diagnostic tool as well. unsure.gif
